Know Your Why and Grow your Business.
“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” ―Friedrich Nietzsche
“The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you discover why you were born.” – Mark Twain
“To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountain that sustain life, not the top.” ― Robert M. Pirsig
Each of these above quotes have something powerful in common with one another. They each highlight the same ideal that it is purpose or reason which drives survival and success. Nietzsche informs us that with a why you can get through anything. Twain tells us that your purpose in life is just as important as the miracle of your birth. Pirsig suggests that the only thing that matters to success is the journey, but not just any journey, a worthy one. These are all deep mindsets to have, which I happen to believe are also right and important in direct sales. Know your why and grow your business.
My first introduction to focusing on finding your “why” was in the many years that I attended college for advanced degrees. In the various courses I took toward attaining my degrees in Psychology and Education, “why” was a hot topic. Consequently, it is important to one’s longevity in either career field. I may have been good at learning and teaching, but I lacked full-fledged passion. My heart was not in it because I was leaving my kids to work. It was with that realization that I stopped working to stay home and I committed to staying home no matter what.
Interestingly enough, I still did not fully understand the concept of “why”. Due to my desire to do something, in late May of 2015, I decided to join the direct sales bandwagon with LuLaRoe. The concept of knowing and sharing your why is prominent on home office update calls and during training gatherings. After hearing FIND YOUR WHY many times I started the first of many google searches on the topic. Hence, the rabbit hole began…
The result of my Google rabbit hole was my discovery of Simon Sinek, a (good looking) master public speaker, on TED and the opposite of what I expected. Diving head first into his trainings, videos, and books have given me the confidence and strategies I needed to grow my business. Watch Simon Sinek’s 2009 Ted Talk, you will be inspired to start on the path to working for your why. It is life changing. I also encourage you to get his book Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. It will take the concept of knowing your why to a whole new level. Then you should delve into his suggested reading list, because each book will change your perspective vastly.
Most noteworthy, he mentions public figures like Martin Luther King Jr. who accomplished what others could have, but did not. Sinek explains that there was something different about King which developed his following. He appealed to emotions. Good business leaders do the same. They create situations where others WANT to follow them. And boy, do I want to follow Simon…
There are multiple layers to my “Why”. My immediate reason is that I want to stay home with my children, provide them a quality education, and teach them the value of hard work. My secondary reasons expand to others and providing them the same hope I found in a simple dress. The WHAT – how I do it, just happens to be selling gorgeous LuLaRoe skirts, dresses, shirts, and leggings. The HOW – is through building lasting relationship with those that I am lucky enough to meet and serve.
